And now with an even bigger membership, we are looking forward to yet greater heights (and fun!) in 2016. Our website is getting renewed and will have a great look to it if preliminary design ideas are anything to go by. You can of course also keep up to date with our Facebook and Twitter pages. With new members joining and our existing members using the winter months to master new skills, our product ranges are ever-expanding. More of that to come on the new website.

We have quite a few dates lined up already and as soon as they are fully agreed we will let everyone know. In the meantime two definite events to be going on with…….

Isle of Auskerry

‘Isle of Auskerry’ produces a range of items made from the North Ronaldsay seaweed-eating sheep. The sheepskin rugs are all in natural colours and symmetrically marked with the distinctive spine and saddle markings of this breed.

The woven throws are designed to reflect Orkney’s connections with the Hudson Bay Company, contrasting the natural colours of the wool with some of the yarn dyed to match the colours of seaweed found on the beaches: flame orange, rhubarb pink, heather purple and moss green.

Visit their website to see the rest of their range which includes hand felted table mats and coasters, pincushion and needlecase kits, cafetiere covers, sheepskin insoles and natural knitting yarn in three colours.

(The evening telephone number is winter only)

Simply Woven and More

Blending different fibres into light and lofty batts and then spinning these batts into yarn can prove to be quite a meditative activity.

The panoramic views of the Northern Isles from my crafting space no doubt enhance this process.  The resulting stash of colourful hanks of yarn is a joy in itself. Weaving and knitting useful garments with my yarn, such as hats and scarves, is a satisfying process. No two garments are ever the same.I also use my yarn and a rag rugging technique to create pictures of different sizes and subjects.  To my delight, I have found that felted woolly jumpers lend themselves to hats, scarves, bags and brooches providing a different dimension to my crafting experience. I feel privileged to have the time to explore my interest in natural and synthetic fibres, colour and texture in the way I do.  I have studied different aspects of art and design through various short courses provided by Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen, The Open College of Art and Design and Orkney College.  Being part of a creative and supportive community enhances my crafting experience.
